She was scuttled in Toulon during November 1942 to prevent her from being captured by the Germans. After the French surrendered, Aigle joined the Vichy French Navy. She saw service during World War II transporting Gold Bars and during Operation Vado, a punitive attack on the Italian coastline around Genoa. ![]() She carried five large 138.6mm guns of a new model that doubled the rate of fire of previous French destroyers and two triple-torpedo launchers. Aigle was laid down in October 1929 in Dunkirk and was commissioned in September 1932. This was due to the French doctrine of having their large destroyers act as scouting vessels capable of fighting small cruisers. French destroyers were much larger and faster than other destroyers of the time, nearly double the displacement of contemporary British designs. ![]() The Aigle was an improvement on the previous French Destroyers with greater speed, seakeeping, and firepower.
